{"id":89,"date":"2008-12-10T22:57:43","date_gmt":"2008-12-11T03:57:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.knitbot.org\/blog\/2008\/12\/10\/obscuratum\/"},"modified":"2008-12-10T22:57:43","modified_gmt":"2008-12-11T03:57:43","slug":"obscuratum","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.knitbot.org\/blog\/2008\/12\/10\/obscuratum\/","title":{"rendered":"Obscuratum"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Now this is obscure:&nbsp; the 1904 date system in Excel.<\/p>\n<p>I was working with a spreadsheet in which I was trying to create a<br \/>\nprojection of a larger spreadsheet.&nbsp; I.e., I want to be able to<br \/>\nshare just a portion of the larger spreadsheet &#8212; so I copied the<br \/>\nrelevant cells from the larger workbook and pasted them into the<br \/>\nshareable workbook as links.&nbsp; Which was fine &#8212; except the dates<br \/>\nwere all wrong.&nbsp; Right day\/month, wrong year.<\/p>\n<p>After a few judicious Google searches, I stumbled across the fact that<br \/>\nthe Mac-created Excel spreadsheet was using the <a href=\"http:\/\/support.microsoft.com\/kb\/215971\">1904 date system<\/a> as<br \/>\na default; unselecting that (in preferences) restored my copied dates<br \/>\nto the right year.&nbsp; Victory!<\/p>\n<p>But, here&#8217;s the larger picture:&nbsp; I need to share the projected<br \/>\nworksheet with staff located at remote offices.&nbsp; A communications<br \/>\nnetwork that lets me send data point-to-point is all I need for<br \/>\nthat.&nbsp; However, point-to-point (connection-oriented) is <span style=\"font-style: italic;\">not<\/span> appropriate to develop the sort<br \/>\nof widespread information network that is the World Wide Web on the<br \/>\nInternet. I would not know who to turn to for resolution to this<br \/>\nannoying glitch. (The link above is to a Microsoft site; the one that I<br \/>\nactually hit at the time was some random user help group).&nbsp; <\/p>\n<p>To state the hopefully-obvious:&nbsp; we&#8217;re all thoroughly invested in<br \/>\nthis global information service supported by the Internet, and anything<br \/>\nthat gets in the way of J.
