{"id":35,"date":"2007-06-24T20:52:24","date_gmt":"2007-06-25T01:52:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.knitbot.org\/blog\/2007\/06\/24\/km-fo\/"},"modified":"2007-06-24T20:52:24","modified_gmt":"2007-06-25T01:52:24","slug":"km-fo","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.knitbot.org\/blog\/2007\/06\/24\/km-fo\/","title":{"rendered":"KM-FO!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>That is, for anyone not up on their &#8220;l33tspeak&#8221; for knitting:&nbsp; a<br \/>\nKnitting Machine &#8212; Finished Object!<\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.knitbot.org\/BlogHTML\/2007\/KM-FO\/KM-Blue-Jacket-sm.jpg\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"KM Blue Jacket\" src=\"http:\/\/www.knitbot.org\/BlogHTML\/2007\/KM-FO\/KM-Blue-Jacket-thmb.jpg\" style=\"border: 0px solid ; width: 240px; height: 88px;\" \/><\/span><\/a>\n<\/div>\n<p>\nIt&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.knitbot.org\/KnitBot-Yarn-Gallery\/2007-BlueKMJacket\/KMBlueJacket.html\">posted<\/a><br \/>\nin my drafty gallery.<\/p>\n<p>Yes, I have had that knitting machine for just about a year.&nbsp; Yes,<br \/>\nthis is the first completed project from that knitting machine &#8212; since<br \/>\nswatches don&#8217;t count as completed projects :^) .&nbsp;&nbsp; The two<br \/>\nmajor challenges have been:&nbsp; <\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>finding chunks of time to sit in front of the machine (since<br \/>\nmachine knitting is not something you can just do for 5 minutes, set<br \/>\ndown, and pick up again a week later, the way you can with hand<br \/>\nknitting); and<\/li>\n<li>finding yarns that are really fine enough to work with the<br \/>\nstandard gauge machine (in this instance, a Brother KH930).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>For this sweater, I eventually wound up using 2 different yarns at once<br \/>\n&#8212; each one is really thread-like.&nbsp; You can see them in this<br \/>\ndetailed photo:<\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.knitbot.org\/BlogHTML\/2007\/KM-FO\/IMG_2009-sm.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"threads\" src=\"http:\/\/www.knitbot.org\/BlogHTML\/2007\/KM-FO\/IMG_2009-thmb.jpg\" style=\"border: 0px solid ; width: 200px; height: 150px;\" \/><\/a>\n<\/div>\n<p>\nYou can also see the effect I got from knitting the two together &#8212; a<br \/>\nbit more stripey than variegated, but still interesting.&nbsp; You can<br \/>\nalso see that, even though I was working with 2 strands together, the<br \/>\nstitches are still NOT BIG AT ALL.&nbsp; This machine makes a very fine<br \/>\nfabric.<\/p>\n<p>The edging, of which you can see some detail above, is a crochet trim I<br \/>\nadded after assembling the sweater.<\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<table style=\"width: 100%; text-align: left;\" border=\"0\" cellpadding=\"2\" cellspacing=\"2\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"vertical-align: top; text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.knitbot.org\/BlogHTML\/2007\/KM-FO\/CRW_1991-RD-sm.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"WorkBench\" src=\"http:\/\/www.knitbot.org\/BlogHTML\/2007\/KM-FO\/CRW_1991-RD-thmb.jpg\" style=\"border: 0px solid ; width: 200px; height: 150px;\" \/><\/a>\n      <\/td>\n<td style=\"vertical-align: top; text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.knitbot.org\/BlogHTML\/2007\/KM-FO\/Inspector-sm.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Inspector\" src=\"http:\/\/www.knitbot.org\/BlogHTML\/2007\/KM-FO\/Inspector-sm.jpg\" style=\"border: 0px solid ; width: 209px; height: 150px;\" \/><\/a>\n      <\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"vertical-align: top; text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-style: italic;\">Assembly<\/span>\n      <\/td>\n<td style=\"vertical-align: top; text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-style: italic;\">Inspection<\/span>\n      <\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><\/span>\n<\/div>\n<p>Yes, well, about the cat&#8230; See, I know that some cats are attracted to<br \/>\nknitting.&nbsp; Guiness largely ignores mine, for which I&#8217;m thankful<br \/>\n(though she has certainly been known to hunt-and-capture dangling ends<br \/>\nwhen near-completed items are tried on&#8230;).&nbsp; But, the blocking<br \/>\nsweater was *wet*!&nbsp; And, she wasn&#8217;t anywhere near that room!&nbsp;<br \/>\nAnd I wanted more air circulation to speed the drying!&nbsp; So I left<br \/>\nthe door open and wandered off to do something else. I think some<br \/>\nlittle kitty alarm must have gone off in the house, somewhere, because<br \/>\nas soon as I came back:&nbsp; wham, plonk in the middle of this drying<br \/>\nsweater, one very pleased-with-herself cat!<\/p>\n<p>A bit more about the sweater\/project history&#8230; A long time ago, <a href=\"http:\/\/ecotroph.net\/blojsom\/blog\/knitbot\/Knitting\/?permalink=KM_MLE_Anticipation.txt\">with<br \/>\na plastic bed (toy) knitting machine and a very different yarn (Dale<br \/>\n&#8220;Svale&#8221;),<\/a> I made up the pieces for this jacket.&nbsp; <a href=\"http:\/\/ecotroph.net\/blojsom\/blog\/knitbot\/Knitting\/?permalink=KM_MLE_Not_so_Beautiful_Letdown.txt\">And<br \/>\nthen discovered that plastic (toy) knitting machines are very finicky<br \/>\nabout producing anything like even gauge throughout the course of a<br \/>\nproject.&nbsp;<\/a> Different sweater pieces were wildly different<br \/>\nproportions than the ones they were meant to line up with.<\/p>\n<p>It was, in fact, that experience, that finally drove me to commit to <a href=\"http:\/\/ecotroph.net\/blojsom\/blog\/knitbot\/Knitting\/?permalink=Welcome_to_the_next_level.txt\">buying<br \/>\na metal-bed knitting machine<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>So, there is the sense of completing the circle with this project<br \/>\n&#8212;&nbsp; I had to change the yarn and the machine, but I did manage to<br \/>\ncomplete it, by gar!&nbsp; <\/p>\n<p>I decided I had so much fun with that &#8212; I made another one, this<br \/>\nweekend!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>That is, for anyone not up on their &#8220;l33tspeak&#8221; for knitting:&nbsp; a Knitting Machine &#8212; Finished Object!
