welting fantastic
Pattern:  Usual sock hybrid

Yarn:
Pagewood Farm Chugiak, (approx 420 yds)
Method:  Hand knitting
Completed:  June 8 2010.

These are my standard socks -- toe up, following Wendy's Toe-Up pattern, and Cat Bordhi's Riverbed Arch expansion/plain heel.   I used Barbara Walker's "Welting Fantastic" pattern (from "A Treasury of Knitting Patterns") for the ankle, done on a multiple of 10 stitches.    I chose this to get some rippling into the pattern, breaking up the yarn striping.

I was astonished to run out of yarn before completing the second sock!  There are 450yds per skein of this yarn;  I usually use less than 300 for a pair of socks for myself, and these were not shaping up to be unusually tall.  I must have been knitting much more densely than usual.

welting detail
Detail shot -- welting.
missed it by that much!completed plus leftovers
Left picture -- see how little yarn was left, when I had several rows to finish to match the first sock.

Right picture -- completed sock (with one fewer welting patterns, in both socks (ripped the first one back)), and leftovers.

In retrospect -- the yarn from the sample might have been enough to make the diff to finish the second sock on original plan, but it's not clear.
